Young Great Horned Owl

We found this young Great Horned Owl because we knew there had been a nest in the area.  He and his sibling had been sitting together on the branch of a tree, and then this beautiful little one flew a short distance.  I got this shot of him flying, but the background was full of dead tree branches, so I used Photoshop to cut him out of that and put him on a more pleasing plain background.  I hope you like it!

From Audubon’s website:  “Found almost throughout North America and much of South America is this big owl. Aggressive and powerful in its hunting (sometimes known by nicknames such as ‘tiger owl’), it takes prey as varied as rabbits, hawks, snakes, and even skunks, and will even attack porcupines, often with fatal results for both prey and predator. Great Horned Owls begin nesting very early in the north, and their deep hoots may be heard rolling across the forest on mid-winter nights.”
